Tu Tu Tuesday

Happy "Tu Tu Tuesday (thanks Avery for the special day)!!  First off, THANK YOU so much for all the candy everyone has donated for Saturday Live!!  This morning I was gone at a workshop, but got an excellent report from the substitute and am so very proud of them and their behavior.  They had Health Enhancement right away this morning.  For spelling, they reviewed the spelling rule and practiced their spelling words.  For reading, they read an article about Ellis Island and Angle island in the past and today.  Ellis Island is in New York and where 12 million immigrants from Europe entered the country from 1850-1954. Angel Island is in San Francisco and where Asian immigrants entered the United States from 1910-1040. They discussed these two islands, had great conversation, and then compared and contrasted them in the past and today.  They also did some practice with synonyms.  For math today we worked on multiplication patterns.  Commutative property of multiplication is when you can multiply two factors in any order, 4 X 5= 5 X 4.  Associative property of multiplication is when you can change the grouping of factors, (8X4)X5 = 8X(4X5).  We also discussed the following pattern:
50x7=350
500X7=3,500
5,000X7=35,000
50,000X7=350,00
All we do is multiply 5X7 which is 35, then add the number of zeros to 35.
For science, today we started discussing producers, consumers, herbivores, omnivores, and carnivores.  We will continue our discuss tomorrow.

Our 5th grade class will be taking the fall NWEA on Thursday, September 20th, Friday, September 21st, and Monday, September 24th. We will be taking one test each day for approximately one hour each morning beginning around 10 a.m.  Fifth grade will take reading, math, and language.  A good night's rest and breakfast will help your child perform at his/her optimal level.  They may also wish to bring a healthy snack to eat these days before the test.  I know they ALL will try their hardest and do great on the test!!
