Thrilling Thursday

Happy Thrilling Thursday!  It sure is a lot colder then yesterday and we sure can feel winter coming!!  We started this morning with Mrs. Neese and her lesson today was personal safety.  Part of the School District Two Health Enhancement Curriculum includes Personal Safety Information for students in Kindergarten through sixth grade.  Today, they were instructed on the difference between safe and unsafe touch, how to say "no" assertively, and how to get help from people who care.  Mrs. Neese encourages you to discuss this important topic with your child and review the "Four Steps of Safety" ( say no, get away, tell someone, and be believed). For reading today, we reread and discussed "Matthew Henson:Polar Express".  Matthew faced many challenges on his expedition, but he never gave up and was determined to reach the North Pole.  We worked on making predictions and understanding Greek and Latin roots to better understand the meaning of words.  For language we talked more about common and proper nouns and then did a worksheet to check for mastery.

The last part of reading we had a guest speaker and hero visit our class, Mr. English. He flies the Medvac helicopter.  He talked to us about some of his equipment.  He brought in his body armor that he wears when he flies the helicopter to protect him, his vest that only pilots wear that has tubes of water in it to cycle ice cold water and keep him cool, his hat for desert wear, and his preflight gloves he wears to check the helicopter before flying it.  He showed us an AMAZING slide show, talked about his time in Iraq, and what Veteran's day is all about.  We are SO lucky to have him here at Bitterroot.

In math we continued with dividing whole numbers by two-digit divisors.  I think we are starting to get the hang of it and our confidence is growing.  This is a new concept and we will continue practicing the process.  When completing problems we ALWAYS need to start with an estimation to give us an idea of the range of our answer.  Then we ALWAYS need to check our answer through multiplication to make sure it is right and there isn't anything we need to go back and change.  With division there is many steps and our thinking needs to be organized.  It is also important that we know ALL our multiplication facts!

Wild Life Fish and Game with "Hooked on Fishing", had to cancel due to being sick.  So in the afternoon after Successmaker and Read About we worked more on reading!
